The Start of Spring Run-Off

  • River: Snake River, Green River
  • Flows: Snake River @ Flat Creek: 2,830 cfs / Green River @ Warren Bridge: 375 cfs
  • Weather: Mostly sunny, highs in the mid 60’s
  • Water Clarity: 2-3 feet and decreasing on the Snake. 1-2 feet on the Green River and holding steady.

The entire month of April was very good Skwala dry fly fishing on the Snake. The early part of the month was very good midge dry fly in the riffles. Today’s current fishing report sees the Snake River rising steadily, this can slow fishing down a bit. A small streamer in a mottled color can work well or also a large white streamer can produce large trout.

We did guide training on the Green River this Friday, nymphing was a little slow but produced a few fish. The streamer bite was on immediately, once we switched over mid day.

What’s Working:

  • Dry Flies: Black or Brown foam size 10 Water Walkers with different colors of green in the belly. The black egg sack on the end of any Skwala dry is a great option. Very sporadic blue winged olives, but not a strong enough hatch for fish to target them on the Green.
  • Nymphs: Small Pat’s Rubber Legs, Zebra Midges, and Jujubee Midge on the Snake.  Small red worms in a size 14-16 and a small jig nymph with some flash to stand out in the off color water of the Green.
  • Streamers: Olive Sculpzillas and Large White Dungeons on the Snake. Large Sparkle Minnow and a large Olive Dungeon on the Green River.
