Venice, Louisiana Fishing: Chasing Redfish in the Heart of the Gulf
After redfish fishing in Cocodrie, Louisiana, we set our sights on Venice. Just a few hours to the east, Venice sits at the southernmost tip of the state, where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico. On our way, we stocked up on food, before following the Mississippi south from New Orleans about an hour and a half. This would be our second trip to Venice, although this time around we had a newer boat and a much better navigation system.

The next day, Christmas Eve, we were ready to get on the water, only to find the same problem again. After some serious disappointment, we discovered that the plug-in for the trolling motor was flipping a breaker. Problem solved. So, we cruised to the boat ramp.
Heading South, we were going to check out a new zone. We poled for a while before realizing that birds were chasing something deeper in the bay, so we went to check it out… not long after we found several schools of happy, floating Redfish. We chased fish all day with the trolling motor, watching them fight over our flies on the surfaces. Each of us caught 8-10 fish on the surface, making this, undoubtedly, our best day yet.
The weather in December can be rough at times, which we experienced. Three days of solid rain and the Mississippi turned to chocolate milk. We moved North to Port Sulphur and had several good days chasing fish crawling on the banks. We found that there were a lot of creeks to explore in that area. We also spent a few days exploring further west of the Mississippi where the water was clear.
We fished two weeks total in the Venice area. Once the weather turned too cold we packed up and head south in search of warmer water.
